Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process based on the relationship between an individual and a therapist designed to identify challenges to and improve one's mental health. Dr. Wade thinks of herself and her patients as fellow travelers who are on a journey together. She considers herself to be the guide, but her patients to ultimately be the experts on themselves. Her expertise is in psychological thought which she will apply to the roads of each unique mind.

She provides individual therapy to adults at minimum one time per week and up to four times per week. Therapy is generally open-ended and focused on deep exploration of the self and addressing root causes of emotional distress, but she does focus on the reduction of symptoms as needed. To use another travel analogy, Dr. Wade's approach to therapy is to find the tire that needs a replacement and do the work of getting a new tire installed and balanced, instead of continuing the trip with a patch. However, she recognizes that, at times, a patch is necessary to enable the travel to the next service station. While her work is focused on depth exploration of the self, she is adept at enabling the development of coping techniques and strategies.

Dr. Wade is open-minded, empathic, and, when possible, incorporates humor into her work. Because of her broad and general training, she has experience working with a wide-range of mental health concerns including depression, transitions in life, substance misuse, spiritual and religious concerns including trauma, emotional dysregulation, grief, racial and sexual identity development and trauma, poverty and socio-economic status related trauma, immigration, and anxiety. Dr. Wade believes everyone could benefit from psychotherapy to increase the capacity for flourishing and also works with artists, creatives, and those wishing for general self-exploration without a specific concern or diagnosis.

FAQ

  • Are you currently accepting new therapy patients?
Yes. I provide therapy to adults and am currently accepting new patients. This website will be updated if/when that changes.
  • Do you accept my insurance?
I am in-network with Aetna. Also, I automatically provide monthly "superbills" to all my patients. If you have out-of-network benefits with your insurance, these superbills allow you to be reimbursed by your insurance company at their out-of-network reimbursement rate. Additionally, the online payment platform I use does accept Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards.
  • Do you have a sliding-scale policy that allows me to pay a rate that's based on my income?
I do have a set percentage of sliding-scale patients I work with, but these spots are currently full. I do not currently have any available sliding-scale openings. This website will be updated when one becomes available.
  • Why don't you accept my insurance?
Accepting insurance involves completing several steps to be "approved" to be able to take insurance. At this time, I have only completed this process with Aetna. This website will be updated if/when this changes.
  • Do you accept credit cards? Personal checks?
Yes. Yes. I offer an online payment portal that accepts credit, debit, and FSA cards. Payment is also accepted via personal check via post or in-person.
  • Why is your rate so much?
One helpful way to think of rates for psychotherapy is to consider not that you are paying for just the hour, but also for the years of education and experience that your provider brings into that hour. Dr. Wade holds a Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral Degree in the field of Psychology. To be eligible to receive the license to practice Psychology in New York that she holds, she had to complete her doctoral level studies, a year of full-time employment, an additional year of postdoctoral employment, and pass a licensure exam. Even beyond that, she is continuing her education with her pursuit of a Certificate in Psychoanalysis. She also has thousands of hours of experience giving psychotherapy. Additionally, geography plays a large role in the cost of psychotherapy. With its high cost of living, in New York City, this rate is actually within the moderate range.
